There are many reasons for us having to experience these things but we will concentrate on the basics.

First - For us to appreciate pure love and its accompanying positive emotions we must have something to compare it with. How can you know what hot is if you do not know what cold is? How can you know what happiness is if you have never been unhappy? More relevant perhaps is that you cannot appreciate being happy if you have never been unhappy. You cannot appreciate warmth if you have never been cold. To allow us to experience these things we have to take physical form. Thus we have chosen a particular body and particular life to allow us to experience a particular set of emotions, sensations and feelings this time. In other words the body we have and the life we have is the way we have chosen to experience these things. So the next time you look in the mirror and wonder why you don’t look like Jordan or Brad Pitt, or you don’t have David Beckham’s money it is because YOU chose not to! The next time you wonder why everything seems to happen to you it is because YOU chose it to happen! Scary isn’t it?

Maybe what you should be wondering is why on earth would I choose to look like this! Or why on earth would I choose to have this happen? Why have I chosen this life, these experiences, these problems, these disabilities, these emotions?

Part of the answer of course is in what we have just said. We have chosen this body, this appearance, this life – with all its irritations, aggravations, problems, disasters, illnesses etc just for that reason - to experience these things. But why on earth would we be so mad as to do that? Why don’t we all choose to live in perfect harmony, in happiness, in love and in light?

Because we have not yet all reached the stage in our evolution where we can all see the benefit in that. We are all at different levels. Some spirits have been here many times and experienced many things. Others are just starting out so have yet to experience the vast array of emotions, feelings and sensations that the older spirits have already experienced. This is our university – the University of Life.  And by learning we evolve because that is really why we are here - to evolve. But we are also here to enjoy that learning process. Just think how much more we learn when we are enjoying ourselves. So it is also our playground and like all playgrounds, life is there in microcosm.

The playground bully who likes to control everyone, who likes to make himself look good at the expense of others, who uses his physical strength to hurt others. If we look around the world there are many examples of playground bullies. Then there are the teachers – some are good and some indifferent. Some want to share their knowledge and experience with anybody who will listen for the benefit of all, others want to keep knowledge to themselves or corrupt it and use it for their own purposes, often to manipulate and control others. Then there are the popular people, the unpopular people, the people who seem to have everything, the people for whom everything always goes right and the people who seem to lurch from one crisis to another.

So why else would we want to choose to experience all these problems?

Because we use those problems, those experiences, to learn from. At some point our spirits would have experienced wars, and the emotions that go with that. Hate, anger, violence, murder, mutilations etc. If we look back at history we can see that the way our ancestors behaved is often abhorrent to us now. Even though there are people in the world who still carry out atrocities the majority of people now find such practices incomprehensible. We cannot possible understand the mentality behind those actions because we have gone past that stage. We have progressed beyond those things. We have evolved. But we are still evolving. Our spirit is constantly evolving, striving to be the best it can be and to reach the heights of purity and perfection. We cannot do that at Home. We have to take physical form to experience all these things and to learn to use the gifts we have been given for the benefit of all and not to the detriment of others. We will return to this a bit later.

If we believe that we are spirit then presumably this means that there must be life after death?
