Does God Exist? |

One of the things we often ask is whether, in the light of all the suffering in the world, God really exists. When we look at the state of our planet, at the injustice, the wars, the seemingly endless cruelty, sadness and pain and all the natural disasters we often ask ourselves this. But if you think about what we have just said and you change your perceptions accordingly it all starts to make some kind of sense. Our spirits have taken physical form to enable them to evolve. Because it is only through experiencing everything that we can evolve we have to take physical form otherwise we cannot experience anything and so cannot evolve. We will not evolve if all we have is happiness and light. First we can experience this as spirits all the time at Home and secondly if we don’t experience anything other than happiness and light how will we know this is what we are experiencing because we will have nothing to compare it with? So if that explains the suffering we cause each other what about natural disasters? We are all part of one great consciousness, one Great Mind. This includes the planet. The planet is also evolving and changing. Everything we do impacts on the planet. On one hand there are the results of our physical activities. Cutting down the rain forest is destroying the planet’s lungs. Deforestation in other parts of the world leads to mudslides when there is heavy rain. Our exploitation of the planet causes floods and droughts and these in turn lead to other catastrophes. On the other hand there are the results of our emotional activities. These are the negative thoughts and emotions that we have. These thoughts and emotions manifest themselves in the physical ways we have just mentioned. Our thoughts and emotions are so powerful that they can impact on the very planet that we live on. Think about it. Your thoughts are a very powerful form of energy. How many times have you suddenly thought about someone you haven’t heard from in years and then they contact you? Or you ring someone and they tell you they were just about to ring you? How many times do you pick up on what others are thinking? Do you say what someone else is thinking? Do they say what you are thinking? What about the saying ‘be careful what you wish for! How many times have you wished for something and it happens but not in the way you wished for it. A perfect example of this is mankind’s wish to control the planet and its weather. And that is exactly what has happened. Look what a good job we have made of it. Global warming is a result of our actions. Thousands of species are extinct or in danger of extinction due to our actions. Youth versus age? We cannot survive in physical form without the planet. Our physical bodies need physical things to survive – oxygen, nitrogen, water, food, light, warmth etc. Our planet is getting old. We don’t have a very good record when it comes to dealing with ‘old’. Instead of treating our elderly people with respect we treat them as a nuisance. We celebrate ‘youth’ and ‘youth culture’ but in spiritual terms is that a good idea? It was ‘us’ as young spirits that carried out all the horrendous things throughout the planets history that we now look on with abhorrence. We have now evolved past that stage. As older spirits we know that we have to take care of our planet. But the planet will only be taken care of when world consciousness evolves. For that to happen we have to evolve and one of the ways we do that is when we die. This is when we go ‘Home’, evaluate what we have learnt and move forward to the next stage. To save the planet we need to be evolving faster than we are. To enable this to take place large scale ‘natural’ disasters happen. Those who are still here begin to rethink their attitudes to the planet and for a little while we all become more aware of what we are doing to both the planet and each other. We also become much more spiritual as we search for some kind of meaning and explanation. This again raises the consciousness of the world and despite the suffering or maybe because of it we all become more spiritually aware. But we have very short memories and the world at the moment is a very unstable place. Everything is in a state of change. This in itself is not a bad thing provided those changes are for the benefit of all. Unfortunately this is not what is happening. The world is becoming even more polarised into those who have and those who have not, the rich and the poor, the weak and the strong. Although our resources are not infinite there is more than enough to go round if we could only learn to share, to become more tolerant, to use the gifts we have been given wisely and for the benefit of all. Perceptions Of course this means compromise, this means sitting down and discussing things that we don’t agree on. Because we all have different life experiences and thus different perceptions there are bound to be disagreements. But many conflicts can be overcome if people start to listen to each other, and to be honest with each other. Many conflicts are caused because we can only see things from our own point of view or because we only think of our own self interest. If we change our perceptions and realise that we are all one spirit, one great consciousness, self interest takes on a whole new meaning. It is in all our interests to look after each other, to ensure that we all have enough to eat, clean water to drink, warmth, heat and light. It is in all our interests to end poverty, to end war, to end pain and suffering. Even if you find it hard to grasp the idea that we are all one – think about the concept of reincarnation. Most of the world’s religions and belief systems accept that reincarnation is possible. If this is the case we are going to have to come back again. So isn’t it better that we sort out the problems now? Otherwise we could be ‘the minority’ we could be ‘the starving’; we could be the suffering millions. Yes it sounds very selfish to think like this but isn’t it just another way of turning our ‘gift’ of selfishness into something positive? The world we live in is our responsibility. We have chosen for it to be like it is. If we don’t like it then we have the power to change it. To change things we have to start taking responsibility for ourselves, to take responsibility for the way we think, to take responsibility for the way we act. Changing our perceptions of what we are, why we are here, and our views of life and death and ‘god’ are the first steps. It is no longer acceptable to blame ‘god’ for our suffering, we chose our world – if we don’t like it then it is up to us to change it!
